20/12 “March of Resistance” – an EDL front?

A “March of Resistance” through London on the 20th of December has recently been called. The group responsible initially used the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts’ logo and claimed the event had been organised by them. After complaints were made, the name of the creator changed briefly to the “British National Union of Students” and then to the “UK People’s Initiative”. The proposed starting location of the march is Piccadilly Circus, an apolitical area that will be brimming with tourists and Christmas shoppers at this time of the year.

No-one knows who this group are and questions regarding the nature of the group and of the march have gone unanswered. There are claims that the march is linked to far-right groups, and the creator of the event has been shown to have posted Islamophobic comments on Facebook and has his political views set as ‘Geert Wilders’, with quotes by Mussolini in his favourite quotations. An article was posted on Indymedia supporting the “march”, but uses the same rhetoric and shows the same political naivety of the creator of the event page. Claims that this march is linked to far-right groups are quickly deleted from the page.

NCAFC has been quick to strongly distance itself from the event and warns of the dubious politics and motivations of the group. Others would be well advised to steer clear of this event. It is at best a fake, at worst an EDL front designed to discredit student demonstrations or even ambush peaceful protesters. This development has taken place shortly after Tommy Robsinson aka Steven Yaxley-Lennon, self-proclaimed leader of the EDL and irreconcilable imbecile, vowed to support police against student protesters, and after police have enunciated wishes to ban student protests. It is interesting to see how this group, initially claiming to be apolitical, has developed into a quasi-fascist movement, sucking up to the monarchy and salivating over police brutality.

What is not surprising is the level of stupidity employed by those who conceived of this idea. Anyone who has spent more than a few seconds looking at the event page should be under no illusions that this has not been proposed with good intentions. While it would be amusing to see far-right wing-nuts getting the shit kicked out of them on the 20th, spread the word and discredit this “march”: not a single person should wander along and get caught up in something they’re not fully aware of.

    Who actually cares?

So what if its not NCAFC, Its a protest and I will be attending.

If you have to always take instructions from a high offical authority then you clearly cant make decisions for yourself.

Im glad somebody out there actually organized a protest, A single individual. Well done

    Im attending

If anyone gets beaten up by the EDL they will damn well fucking care.

The point is that it probably isn’t a protest at all – did you even read my post through?

Thanks for the psychoanalysis mate but I’m an anarchist.

If you’re attending, then good luck in not getting beaten up by the EDL. You go at your own folly.

@John… If 50% of the above analysis is correct, you are willing to throw your weight behind a fake protest possibly (even probably) organised with the intent of portraying the genuine student and anti-cuts protesters in the worst possible light and giving ammunition to the police in their avowed strategy to seek ever greater powers to control you and me… I’m not sure that Howl’s use of the word folly does it justice…

@ John Reeds, do you not question WHY the protest organizers changed the name 2-3 times if it is a genuine protest?

To me a GENUINE protest would not need to change the name.

I`m not too sure this has anything to do with EDL. As far as I could ascertain is that the person who called this so called march is a 16yr old kid, Russian background and his SU are aware of it but were unable to dissuade him. His IP is known and the net is allegedly closing in on him. Basically, its an angry kid on a power trip. As for the march, I predict it will be a damp squid.

i thought so myself 24 hours ago but this info is WRONG! The rumour only started (and spread rapidly) when the young, idealistic and somewhat naive organiser of the event lied about having the support of various trade unions and student groups. People then obviously became suspicious and questioned his motives for calling the march in the first place, which was followed by further evasiveness on his part. BLESS HIM, he just doesn’t know what he is doing and it was too much to handle for him 🙂 I will post evidence supporting the organiser of the event below.

The whole thing ended in a political rumour-frenzy culminating in various groups issuing statements that the EDL called this march in the first place, when, in fact, the organiser is completely innocent. The EDL are most likely to be there (since they promised to attend future student marches) but let’s be honest, what real threat can they pose to our movement. LET THEM COME, as long as they are not organising any marches in our name. This event is NOT a fake or called by the EDL, however they most likely caught on and are using it to their advantage now.

it’s a shame, it really is. We have to ask ourselves what went wrong when the one time someone has the balls to organise something without the support of the “party” (NCAFC) there is a wave of paranoia and his event get’s shut down…this has some serious implications for further marches that may be organised independently, because now everyone is going to be afraid to attend anything that isn’t “officially” backed, never mind all the bitter internal bickering and arguing that i saw online over the last few days.

    In his own words –

    http://peopinitiative.livejournal.com/478.html

Our Saviour and leader John Abrahams, member of the Tory party from 20 December and leader of the People Initiative March. An elitist egotist who despises working class students and was on a power trip of manipulation. Many of you fell for it. Some of us looked at his use of language (people, folk, condemnation of radicals etc) and welcome for the EDL on the demonstration(read the exchanges on Facebook) investigated possible links. Maybe we went down a few wrong avenues but we found an admirer of Geert Wilders who quotes from Mussolini and now see he despises students. His organisational abilities were also chaotic and would have led the march into some sort of confronation with police or EDL with no plan of defence. Do you want this sort of self appointed leader of students?
None of us, I believe, are opposed to autonomous marches and demonstrations, just those led by anti student tories with fascist leanings.
This was not organised opposition but individuals who smelt something potentially damaging and rightly acted on it. Did we do wrong?
